Modeling coordination between renewables and grid: Policies to mitigate distribution grid constraints using residential PV-battery systems

Abstract: Distributed photo-voltaic (PV) generation is one of the pillars of energy transitions around the world, but its deployment in the distribution grid requires costly reinforcements and expansions. Prosumage -consisting of a household-level PV unit coupled with a battery storage system -has been proposed as an effective means to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources and reduce distribution grid stress. However, tapping its full potential requires regulatory interventions; otherwise, system costs … Show more

“…Besides investments and dispatch, Marwitz and Elsland (2018), Moshövel et al (2015), andNeetzow et al (2019) discuss whether and under which regulatory circumstances prosumage may require expanding the electricity distribution grid infrastructure. In contrast, Young et al (2019) conclude for an Australian region that benefits from reduced peak grid demand may outweigh foregone revenues from self-consumption for network operators.…”

“…The aim is to examine the extent to which the installation and operation of systems that contribute to the creation of energy self-sufficiency, with regard to electricity and heat in the private sector, is economical when building a new single-family house in Germany. The aim here is not to achieve an off-grid solution -there is no connection of the considered system to the environment -but to retain the connection to the public grid in order to be able to maintain a corresponding degree of flexibility (Netzow et al 2019) in the investigation of the various possible scenarios.…”
