Modeling Deterioration of Bridge Components with Binary Probit Techniques with Random Effects

Abstract: Highway agencies use deterioration models to monitor the performance of bridge components (deck, superstructure, and substructure) and to predict their remaining service lives on the basis of the attributes of the bridges and their operating environments. Most bridge deterioration models are deterministic in nature. However, as a result of recent federal legislation, agencies are paying more attention to risk-based performance evaluation and decision making and are seeking models that incorporate stochastic el… Show more

“…When Equation ( 3) is summarized for the vertical displacement ( ∆ ), it can be expressed as Equation (4). The distance from the neutral axis of the beam cross-section to its thickness and the length of the beam are determined over the course of designing the vertical displacement sensor.…”

“…With the growing interest in bridge maintenance technology, the number of bridges that require a structural safety assessment due to performance degradation and aging has rapidly increased [1,2]. Bridges currently in operation are subjected to performance degradation due to the applied load, deterioration of components, and changes in the external environment [3,4]. It is essential for bridge maintenance to continuously examine such changes in the condition of the bridge and to evaluate bridge safety by continually monitoring them [5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…Similar studies have detailed deterioration research to develop the deterioration of decks over time and obtain the expected service lives of decks on different highways ( 16 ). Additionally, Qiao et al ( 17 ) developed binary probit models to explain trends in bridge component deterioration, especially the probability that the state of a component will drop from one state to another. Bektas et al ( 18 ) investigated the use of the recursive partitioning method for developing classification trees.…”

“…Paint type 1for interstate roads: Probabilistic Methods. The probabilistic models are stochastic, and may be able to capture the deterioration of infrastructure in a manner considered to be more robust than the deterministic method, due to the probabilistic manner of infrastructure deterioration (Qiao et al, 2016). One of the widely used stochastic methods in bridge deterioration analysis is the Markovian model, because it is able to approximate the subsequent conditions using transition probabilities.…”
