Modeling of flow‐induced crystallization in blends of isotactic polypropylene and poly(ethylene‐co‐octene)

Abstract: Poly(ethylene-co-octene) (PEOc) has been shown to provide a high toughening contribution to isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The theoretical modeling of flow-induced crystallization (FIC) of blends of iPP and PEOc is not much reported in the literature. The aim of the present work is to clarify the FIC of iPP upon addition of PEOc in terms of theoretical modeling. The crystallization of iPP and PEOc blends in flow is simulated by a modified FIC model based on the conformation tensor theory. Two kinds of flow fie… Show more

“…This could be attributed to the role of PEOc, which acted as a nucleation agent, thus promoting the crystallization of blends. We have previously demonstrated this in our earlier study [ 45 ]. For the LCB PP/PEOc blends ( Figure 3 b), the onset time of crystallization became much shorter than that of iPP/PEOc, which was due to the synergistic acceleration of the LCBs on the nucleation rate of PP.…”

“…Several researchers have analyzed in detail the crystallization behaviour of iPP/PEOc blends [ 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ]. In our previous study, we demonstrated that the presence of the highly viscous elastomer, PEOc, tended to promote the nucleation of the supercooled iPP melting at the interface of two-phases due to their long relaxation behaviour in shear flow field [ 45 , 46 ]. Moreover, polymers usually undergo complicated flow fields during processing.…”

“…When the iPP sheet was stretched at a specific temperature, the free energy of crystallization decreased [17,39], and the molecular chains oriented along the stretching direction. Spherulites lamellae molecular chains did not relax in a short period of time due to the restricted movement of the molecular chains at the crystallization temperature.…”

“…Molecular chains of iPP become extended and slip under stress stretching [14,15]. Fengyuan Yu [16,17] studied the crystallization kinetics of iPP under shear. Their results indicated that shear treatments have a positive effect on the formation of nucleation, and the induction time for crystallization was more sensitive to the increase in the shear rate.…”

“…This shows that annealing could not promote the structural rearrangement of the molecular chains of the β-modification lamellae, and the crystal phase transformation process did not occur. When the stretching temperature was below the crystallization temperature ( Figure 8 a,b), a β-bundle crystal structure was observed [ 39 , 40 , 41 ], indicating that β-modifications dominated in the system. Oriented lamellae were not observed along the stretching direction, implying that the amorphous molecular chains were oriented, but that the lamellae were not stretched.…”
