Modeling of Multistage Bubble Column Reactors for Oxidation Reaction

Abstract: In this work, a mathematical model based on axial dispersion has been suggested to simulate the behavior of a multistage bubble column reactor. A six-stage pilotscale reactor with an inner diameter of 0.35 m and a height of 12 m was used for hydrogen peroxide production through the direct oxidation of isopropyl alcohol at isothermal condition. Steady-state and dynamic simulations were performed to predict the concentration of all the reactants in gas and liquid phases. It was observed that for steady state-con… Show more

“…Although wood is the major source of cellulosic fibers, annual plants, such as wheat, rice, cotton, sisal, jute, and so forth, are also potentially a large source of cellulosic fibers . The reasons for the enhanced usage of these plants, in addition to saving the cost, are the ecological concerns and the ecosystem survival . Availability, environmental friendly, biocompatibility, low abrasiveness, and high specific stiffness and modulus are some of the most important advantages of cellulosic fibers .…”

“…Gas and liquid phases are modeled separately due to the introduction of chemical reactions. 19 On one hand, the agreement between the experimental and simulation results is satisfactory, but on the other hand the model is rather complicated thus limiting its adoption by others and subsequent use. From the literature reviewed, it is quite evident that most of the current research relates to the traditional gas-liquid reactors and not the JBR.…”

“…Therefore, reactor modeling has become one of the most effective methods to study this topic. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] Ravinath et al use the cell model to simulate the mixing time in a shallow bubbling reactor. 13 In their model, the reactor is divided into different zones according to the ratio of liquid height to reactor diameter 20 and mass exchange rate between each adjacent cell is used to describe the backmixing level.…”

“…A wide variety of bioreactor configurations have been experimentally evaluated to enhance gas-liquid mass transfer characteristics including packed-bed reactors [7], monolithic biofilm reactors [8], trickle-bed reactors [9,10], stirred-tank reactors [11] and membrane-based reactors [12]. Industrial development efforts are largely focused on bubble-column reactors due to their longer gas-liquid contact times, favorable gas composition spatial profiles, and superior mass transfer properties [13,14].
