Modeling the climatic implications and indicative senses of the Guliya δ18O-temperature proxy record to the ocean–atmosphere system during the past 130 ka

Abstract: Abstract. Using an intermediate-complexity UVic Earth System Climate Model (UVic Model), the geographical and seasonal implications and indicative senses of the Guliya temperature proxy found in the Guliya δ18O ice core record (hereinafter, the Guliya δ18O-temperature proxy record) are investigated under time-dependent orbital and CO2 forcings with an acceleration factor of 50 over the past 130 ka. The results reveal that the simulated August–September Guliya surface air temperature (SAT) reproduces the 21-ka … Show more

“…This model is called the UViC Earth System Climate Model (UViC_ESCM, version 2.9) [ Weaver et al ., ] and includes a single‐layer energy‐moisture balance atmospheric model and a 19‐level ocean general circulation model with a horizontal resolution of 3.6° × 1.8° in longitude and latitude. After reaching an equilibrium state, this model was run for 2600 model years with an acceleration factor of 50 under the orbital insolation forcing during the past 130 kyrs [ Xiao et al ., ]. We also performed an EOF analysis on four‐dimensional (longitude, latitude, 12 months, and 2600 model years) SST data set over the Pacific (40°S–60°N, 100°E–80°W).…”

“…The land surface model employs the MOSES (Met Office Surface Exchange Scheme) model. The UVic Model is often used as a tool for understanding the physical process and feedback in the climate system on long timescales, and is widely used in paleoclimate, present climate, and future climate studies4142434445. This model could reasonably reproduce temperature, precipitation, and ocean circulation, with relatively small errors, even compared with the coupled General Circulation Model (GCM)42.…”

“…The monthly concentration of δ 18 O in Guliya is shown to be highly related to the local monthly surface air temperature57. Further studies disclosed that the Guliya δ 18 O record could indicate summer temperatures over the Tibetan Plateau during the past 130 ka4458. The Northern California SST was reconstructed from the alkenone in the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1019 (ODP 1019), with a water depth of 980 m55.…”
