Modeling the clinical and economic implications of obesity using microsimulation

et al.

Abstract: This validated model helps illustrate why obese adults have higher medical and indirect costs relative to normal weight adults, and shows that medical costs for obese adults rise more rapidly with aging relative to normal weight adults.

“…Since 2011, however, advanced methods such as microsimulation modelling [29,30,31] have been used and have led to new findings, requiring further, systematic exploration. Furthermore, some reviews have included studies that were specific to a single country or continent, e.g., the USA [18,26], Canada [24] or Europe [21,22,27], and have excluded studies from all over the world.…”

“…Diabetes imposes a large economic burden that will continue to increase in the next two decades, especially in older adults, because of a higher prevalence of diabetes and higher rates of diabetes-related complications in older age-groups 17 . Obesity also imposes higher costs in adults, negatively impacting income and quality-of-life 18 . Compared with metformin and sulfonylureas, newer agents have substantially higher drug acquisition costs, with DPP-4 inhibitors being less expensive than GLP-1 receptor agonists.…”
