Modeling Vehicles to Grid as a Source of Distributed Frequency Regulation in Isolated Grids with Significant RES Penetration

Abstract: The rapid development of technology used in electric vehicles, and in particular their penetration in electricity networks, is a major challenge for the area of electric power systems. The utilization of battery capacity of the interconnected vehicles can bring significant benefits to the network via the Vehicle to Grid (V2G) operation. The V2G operation is a process that can provide primary frequency regulation services in the electric network by exploiting the total capacity of a fleet of electric vehicles. … Show more

“…The use of EVs could increase electricity demand and risk grid damage. This has to be placed in the context of larger national energy strategies as noted in several islands such as Barbados and Malta (Chae et al, 2020; Clairand et al, 2020; Neofytou et al, 2019). If a goal is to reduce GHG emissions and imported fuel costs, renewable energy generation must be implemented (Pina et al, 2014).…”

“…The results show the possibility to reduce the emissions and the investments in peak load plants. In [6], a bi-directional scheduling algorithm is developed as distributed frequency regulation source and shows the great opportunity for Vehicleto-Grid (V2G) to take part as frequency regulator. Using bi-directional charging, it is also possible to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources (RES), as shown in [7].…”

“…EVs are used in power systems to achieve frequency regulation due to their fast-regulating qualities. Adaptive loop control is used to create EVs with primary frequency regulation [5,6]. The frequency response in an islanded system is studied using EVs, and this article looks at frequency regulation in PFC and SFC with and without EVs [7,8].…”
