Modelling and analysis of a PV/wind/diesel hybrid standalone microgrid for rural electrification in Nigeria

Abstract: The scarce electricity supply in Nigeria is a key factor to the low industrial development in a country well-known for having the least electrification in Africa per capita. Presently, Nigeria employs four different kinds of energy such as coal, natural gas, hydro, and oil. Three of the four resources mentioned above used for the production of energy in Nigeria is connected with increasing emissions of greenhouse gas: natural gas, oil, and coal, with coal releasing the worst. This paper presents a model and an… Show more

“…Several research works have considered the deployment of energy storage systems in different scenarios. These include in offgrid and grid-tied systems (Fedjaev et al, 2016; Gbadegesin et al, 2019; Hassan et al, 2017; Sofimieari et al, 2019; Weitzel and Glock, 2018), with or without renewable energy sources, on large scales for generation and transmission networks (Das et al, 2018; Lorente et al, 2018), or on small scales for residential use (Ruiz-Cortes et al, 2017; Weitzel and Glock, 2018). For whatever purpose or type selected, sizing and operation of storage systems must consider both technical and economic concerns for optimal benefits.…”

“…Sea transport emissions around 1,000 million tonnes of CO2 yearly and contribute to 2.5% of global warming [4], [5]. Therefore, exploration of alternative energy, alternative fuels, energy conservation, and environmental protection technology is becoming a popular research direction [3], [6]- [8]. Renewable energy comes from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, tide and geothermal, which is replenished naturally [9]- [11].…”
