Modelling precursory laboratory seismicity using a roughness-based rate- and state-dependent friction model

Abstract: • Rate and state friction (RSF) models were developed from roughness measurements of a friction experiment that displayed properties of wear • Simulations showed that smooth sections nucleated events that ruptured and were arrested by local roughened sections representing barriers • Source properties of the RSF ruptures were compared to independently measured kinematic estimates from a concerted study for the first time
