Moderate Diversity in Forest Structure and Its Low Dynamics Are Favored by Uneven-Aged Silviculture—The Lesson from Medium-Term Experiment

Abstract: For several decades, there has been growing interest in highly diversified forests as a result of their management using the so-called uneven-aged silviculture. Such management and forests resulting from its application fulfil the purpose of forest ecosystem protection without significant limitation of the other forest functions and services. The usefulness of such silvicultural system depends largely on the species composition of the stand. In Poland, this system has been used primarily in silver fir (Abies a… Show more

“…Furthermore, it is important to know stand structure for understanding forest management [34,84]. In the case of silver fir stands, their characteristic structure is relatively even-aged and relatively uneven-aged [34,85]. These management practices are economically efficient as they ensure a vigorous tree growth and, consequently superior productivity classes [85].…”

“…In the case of silver fir stands, their characteristic structure is relatively even-aged and relatively uneven-aged [34,85]. These management practices are economically efficient as they ensure a vigorous tree growth and, consequently superior productivity classes [85]. Many studies have shown that silver fir stands managed in this way are characterized by a better resistance and stability against harmful factors, including SO 2 emissions that, in high percentages, increase silver fir mortality rates [83,86].…”
