Modern markers for evaluating bone disease in multiple myeloma (Review)

Abstract: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a bone marrow neoplasia with increasing incidence compared to previous years. Although new therapeutic molecules have been introduced, it remains an incurable disease with severe repercussions to patients. For many patients, bone disease represents a severe problem often causing pain, pathological bone fractures, and spinal cord compression, which affects the quality of life. This article analyzes the main markers of bone destruction in MM as well as risk factors for severe bone damage… Show more

“…It is important to note that lower serum ratio of vitamin D to β-CTX not only predicts OS but also predicts PFS in patients with NDMM, which is also in line with the high-risk clinical characteristics and cytogenetics. The serum levels of β-CTX is sensitive to predicting subclinical bone disease before the onset of manifested lytic lesions, which is capable of detecting the degree of bone resorption in MM ( 32 ). Our findings highlight the importance of β-CTX levels in the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and clinical prognosis in patients with NDMM.…”

“…This is attributed to the production of osteoclast-activating factors by myeloma cells, [ 8 ] which subsequently stimulates osteoclast activity. [ 9 ] As a result, bone disintegration and destruction occur. Potential outcomes include bone pain, bone deformation, and pathological fracture.…”

“…The patients' age median in Brazil is 63 years old, varying from 18 to 100, according to the Oncology Observatory 3 . In turn, in Europe the age median at the time of diagnosis is 72 years old, indicating that MM is an aged people's disease 4 .…”
