Modern Trends in Catalyst and Process Design for Alkyne Hydrogenations

Abstract: This review provides an overview of the recent achievements in catalytic process development for alkyne hydrogenations. It underlines the necessity of simultaneous optimization over different length scales from molecular/nanoscale of active phase, up-to macro-scale of catalytic reactor design. One case study, the hydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol, is analyzed in detail to illustrate the practical application of this approach. Finally, it presents the personal view of the authors concerning the new trends … Show more

“…Hence, the catalytic properties of HNPs were evaluated using semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene, which is of special importance to chemical industries [39][40][41]. We first examined the catalytic performance of these nanocatalysts (from CuS to 4/4+HNPs) using a fixed amount (5.4 μmol) of Pd x Cu y S z (x + y + z = 1; Table S1 in the ESM).…”

“…3 The morphology (shape and size) of the active Pd nanocrystals has a great impact on their catalytic performance in alkyne hydrogenations. 4,5 When a dependence of activity, expressed as turnover frequency (TOF), with particle morphology can be established, the reaction is then referred to as structure-sensitive. Much effort has been devoted to the investigation of the structure sensitivity of acetylene hydrogenation.…”

“…Partial hydrogenation of a carbon-carbon triple bonds to double bonds is a very important synthetic reaction with high utilization both in the laboratory and on the industrial scale for the synthesis of fine and specialty chemicals [3][4] . In recent years, application and designing of highly selective catalyst for partial hydrogenation of alkynes has attracted more attention by virtue of its importance in synthesis of intermediate products [5][6][7][8][9] .…”
