Modification of Activity and Selectivity of NiMo/SBA-15 HDS Catalysts by Grafting of Different Metal Oxides on the Support Surface

Abstract: In the context of searching for new catalysts for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of petroleum, in the present work a series of NiMo catalysts supported on SBA-15 materials modified by different metal oxides were prepared and tested in dibenzothiophene HDS. The behavior of the HDS catalysts prepared using SBA-15 supports grafted with alkaline earth metal oxides (MgO, CaO, BaO) is described for the first time and compared to that observed for the supports modified with alumina (Al2O3) or transition metal oxides (TiO… Show more

“…The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in Fig. 6 shows that the absorption in the 200-400 nm region should be associated to the ligand-metal charge transfer (LMCT) O 2-→ Mo 6+ in the spectra of each as-synthesized CoMo catalyst [39]. All the samples exhibit absorption at wavelengths shorter than 350 nm in these spectra, indicating that no aggregated MoO 3 species formed on the catalysts surface, which is consistent with the XRD results.…”

“…It suggests the MWH method can produce highly dispersed W species to overcome the negative effect of ZrO 2 on the dispersion of W and thus can fully take advantage of the positive effect of ZrO 2 on weakening the metal-support interaction. As a result, more highly dispersed W species weakly linked to the support are formed at high ZrO 2 content, responsible for the improved HDS activity [50]. On the other hand, ZrO 2 is amorphous in both the supports and catalysts as shown in Fig.…”

“…Accordingly, the adsorption bands are produced by the ligand-to-metal charge transfer, O 2− to Mo 6+ [41,42]. The band positions are determined by the Mo species coordination and agglomeration degrees in the samples.…”
