Abstract: It has recently been discovered that mere cell contact by human cytomegalovirus (CMV) particles leads to profound modulation of cellular gene expression. Reduced monocyte human leukocyte antigen (HLA-DR) expression is a novel biomarker of severity and outcome in many diseases.
