Modification of the Surface Layer of Sintered Duplex Stainless Steels Through Alloying Using the Gtaw Method

Abstract: The demand for materials obtained using powder metallurgy (PM) is constantly increasing, especially on SDSSs, which are characterized by a two–phase structure consisting of ferrite and austenite. The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of surface layer alloying with chromium carbide on the microstructure and tribological properties (e.g., hardness and wear resistance) of SDSSs. The multiphase sinters were prepared from two types of water–atomized steel powders: 316L and 409L. The technique of … Show more

“…The most important problem was to choose melting parameters to ensure the change in the physical and chemical properties of the steel surface. Results presented in this study are part of advanced research conducted by the authors [6,12,26,31,33]. Alloying the surfaces of sintered stainless steels yielded a gradual change in the chemical composition of the surface layer vs. distance from the surface of the modified materials.…”

“…For this purpose, surface modification using fine SiC powder preplacement by the TIG torch technique has been performed. In turn, we showed in [ 9 , 10 , 11 ] the advantages of modifying sintered duplex steels by alloying the surface of the steel with Cr 3 C 2 powder. Oke S. et al reviewed [ 12 ] the impact of spark plasma sintering process parameters on microstructure, phase evolution, and mechanical properties of reinforced stainless steels.…”
