Modified cassava starch/poly(vinyl alcohol) blend films plasticized by glycerol: Structure and properties

Abstract: We report a systematic investigation on the structure–property relationships in glycerol‐plasticized poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/cassava starch blends prepared via solution casting. In particular, PVA mixed with native, low‐oxidized, high‐oxidized, and pregelatinized cassava starches were characterized by means of SEM, XRD, FTIR, thermal analysis and mechanical testing and the immiscible systems were received. Burial tests over a period of several days suggested the preferential degradation of the starch and gly… Show more

“…Moisture PVOH is an eco-friendly compound with ideal film-forming properties [66,67], which in mixture with diols like PDO and BDO, or triols like glycerol achieves good behavioral properties in terms of flexibility and elasticity, and maintains favorable external features like transparency and soft texture. Remarkable results were reported in the literature in the case of polyols used as plasticizers [57]. For example, Boonsuk et al (2020) obtained biodegradable PVOH/chitosan-based films with superior mechanical properties when they added glycerol as a plasticizer [57].…”

“…Similar morphology was reported by Das et al (2010) for glycerol and epichlorohydrin cross-linked starch-PVA films. The incorporation of lemon peel increased the homogeneity of the film surface which could be related to hydrogen bonding between the -OH groups of lemon peel, PVA and starch (Boonsuk et al, 2020). Additionally, this showed the better adhesion and compatibility between peel and matrix (Singha et al, 2015).…”
