Modified Newtonian Gravity as an Alternative to the Dark Matter Hypothesis

Abstract: Abstract:The applications of Newtonian dynamics in galactic scales have shown that the inverse square law is incompatible with the amount of visible mass in the form of stars and molecular clouds. This manifests as the rotational curves of galaxies being asymptotically flat instead of decaying with the distance to the center of the galaxy. In the context of Newtonian gravity, the standard explanation requires a huge amount of dark mass in the form of hypothetical particles that still remain undetected. A diffe… Show more

“…To apply the model in Equation ( 14) we need a postulate for the length scale parameter, β. This was already suggested by Acedo [69] in connection with a similar modified gravity model for the rotational curves of galaxies. The expression for β corresponding to a point source was postulated to take the form:…”

“…He proposed that it should be replaced by a force decreasing inversely with distance to the source instead of the inverse square [64]. Similar models were developed by Tohline [65], Kuhn & Kruglyak [66] and, more recently, by other authors [67][68][69].…”

“…The anomalous rotation curves of the galaxies have been invoked as a convincing proof of the existence of a new kind of matter that not couples to electromagnetic radiation and, consequently, is called dark matter. Anyway, many authors propose that a modified theory of gravity may account for these anomalies without invoking any kind of dark matter [51][52][53][54][55]. For all these reasons, it is not far-fetched to believe that General Relativity could be an incomplete theory, and not only in the sense that it remains inconsistent with quantum theory, but even from a purely classical point of view.…”

“…Other similar models that also try to modify Newton's Law of Gravity by adding additional term are mostly done arbitrarily with the aim of tting the model to the observed data and even reconciling it with dark matter hypothesis. See [6] for dierent types of such models as examples. These non-Newtonian law of gravity approaches, according to [6], ``Although... an old idea that could appear rudimentary...and it is mostly abandoned in modern literature, we think that a reconsideration of this approach could motivate further research in the area of modied gravity theories."…”

These non-Newtonian law of gravity approaches, according to [6], ``Although... an old idea that could appear rudimentary...and it is mostly abandoned in modern literature, we think that a reconsideration of this approach could motivate further research in the area of modied gravity theories." On the other hand, the most commonly used approach in introducing a new theory of gravity nowadays is to generalize the Einstein-Hilbert action, S = √ −gRd 4 x, by imposing additional parameters into the action, such as scalar, vector, tensor and spinor elds for the purpose of making the action conformally invariant and to produce eld equations that might explain the dark energy and dark matter problems.…”
