Modified Smith predictor‐based P‐PD control for pure integrating delay dominated processes

Abstract: Modified Smith predictor (MSP) with P (proportional)‐PD (proportional‐derivative) control methodology is designed for pure integrating processes with time delay (IPTD). Industrial processes such as liquid supply to the large storage, fractional distillation, and superheated steam flow to turbine are found to be integrating in nature with dominant time delay. The proposed P‐PD control strategy ascertains the desired closed loop response. The closed loop time constant (normalλ) is considered to be the sole tunin… Show more

“…Integrating plus time delay (IPTD) which has only one pole at origin and second-order integrating plus time delay (SOIPTD) which has a pole at origin along with another pole in the left half of the s-plane are two of the commonly encountered models of industrial plants. Processes such as storing tank with an outlet pump, 1 the heating of wellinsulated batch system, 2 an isothermal continuous copolymerization reactor, 3 total heat integrating distillation column, 4 and many level control problems 5 are of IPTD type. Moreover, processes like exothermic and jacketed continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR), 6 liquid storing tank, 7 and drying cans of paper drum 5 are of SOIPTD type.…”
