Modular Production with Bio‐Based Resources in a Decentral Production Network

Abstract: The change in process industry from fossil resources to alternative feedstock is indispensable due to the scarcity of resources and global warming. This leads to new challenges for the production systems. On the market side, rapid innovation is accompanied by shorter product life cycles leading to an increasing uncertainty of demand in terms of product type, volume and location. Therefore, the following five elements are combined into a concept to address these challenges: transformable production systems, loc… Show more

“…In the following, a case study of the production of biobased plastics on modular production and intralogistics plants with an annual production volume of about 15 000 tons each 34 is considered. The production at a central site is compared to the production at 12 decentralized sites, which promise advantages through local procurement of biobased resources and local sales.…”

“…In a modular manufacturing scheme, this allows the ethanol plant to be located near to harvest sites and the biojet plant to be located near to the airports, thus reducing supply chain costs, increasing the flexibility of the whole process, and allowing the production network to react to dynamic supply and demand developments.
