Modular Synthesis and Structure–Property Correlation of Pyrene – Rylene Dyes for Cellular Imaging

Abstract: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with extended conjugation and broad absorption properties are interesting due to their easy accessibility, response to external stimuli and high stability. Herein, we report synthesis and full characterization of four compounds having multiple photoactive units in conjugation with a central pyrene group. The compound 2 with extended conjugation showed high fluorescence intensity in the solid state. Since the target molecules are non‐toxic and highly fluorescent, water dispersibl… Show more

“…In addition, the introduction of a pyrene moiety results in an increase in the fluorescence lifetime values to 4.52 ns ( 3c ) and 4.34 ns ( 3g ), which are similar to the data reported for other pyrene derivatives in the literature [ 37 , 38 , 39 ]. For the other fluorophores 3 , the lifetime values vary from 0.49 to 1.22 ns ( Table 1 ).…”

“…All azo-PBIs showed aggregation-induced emission quenching (AIQ) above 25 μM in chloroform, , thus all spectra were recorded at 12.50 μM to minimize the aggregation effects on the optical properties. Concentration-dependent emission spectra for all compounds are given in the Supporting Information (Figures S34–S41).…”
