Modularity in Jasmonate Signaling for Multistress Resilience

Abstract: The plant hormone jasmonate coordinates immune and growth responses to increase plant survival in unpredictable environments. The core jasmonate signaling pathway comprises several functional modules, including a repertoire of COI1-JAZ (CORONATINE INSENSITIVE1-JASMONATE-ZIM DOMAIN) coreceptors that couple jasmonoyl-l-isoleucine perception to the degradation of JAZ repressors, JAZ-interacting transcription factors that execute physiological responses, and multiple negative feedback loops to ensure timely termin… Show more

“…; Howe et al. ) suggests a direct mechanism by which trade‐offs between growth, reproduction, and resistance could easily evolve. Future functional genetic studies will be needed to determine whether these genes in fact are involved in adaptive shifts between growth, reproduction, and defense underlying local adaptation in this system.…”

“…Thus, it would not be surprising if the genetic changes that underlie both QTL are in the same molecular pathway. Further, the negative antagonism between the GA and JA hormone pathways via the DELLA-JAZ signaling node (Havko et al 2016;Guo et al 2018;Howe et al 2018) suggests a direct mechanism by which trade-offs between growth, reproduction, and resistance could easily evolve. Future functional genetic studies will be needed to determine whether these genes in fact are involved in adaptive shifts between growth, reproduction, and defense underlying local adaptation in this system.…”

“…Auxin, cytokinin and gibberellin have received the most attention (Yamaguchi et al, 2012;Mitchum et al, 2013;Davi ere & Achard, 2017;Tooker & Helms, 2014;Gohlke & Deeken, 2014), but brassinosteroids and strigolactones may also be important. Canonical stress hormonessalicylic acid, jasmonate, ethylene, and abscisic acidare pivotal in antagonistic plant interactions (Howe et al, 2018) but are not talked about as much when it comes to plant galls. It seems possible that this binary view of hormone functioneither for growth or immunitymay prove overly simplistic (Robert-Seilaniantz et al, 2011;Vanstraelen & Benkov a, 2012;Pieterse et al, 2012).…”
