Modulation of cell communication and carcinogenesis.

Abstract: In many types of tissue and culture cells, the interiors of adjacent cells communicate with each other through cell-to-cell channels. The fine structure of the cell-to-cell channel has been well studied and defined as a gap junction which consists of six identical, rod-shaped protein subunits [59]. This transmembrane channel permits free exchange of ions and small molecules between contacting cells [53]. This type of interaction between cells has been called "gap junctionalThis communication is readily proved … Show more

“…In 1980, Schenk [21] examined the expression of gap junctions in laryngeal carcinomas and observed a downregulation of the gap junctions in comparison to the normal epithelium. Furthermore, some authors assume a correlation between the loss of GJIC and an increase in the metastatic potential of a cell population [8,22,23].…”

“…39 -41 The absence or reduced number of gap junctions and gap-junctional intercellular communication have been observed in a large number of human and animal tumor cell lines. 39,42 The aim of the present study was to investigate which pathways may play a role in Ca 2Ï© signaling in normal and NF1 keratinocytes. The cells were stimulated mechanically in the presence of inhibitors of gap-junctional or ATP-mediated communication to determine which pathways are operative in Ca 2Ï© signaling between these cells.…”
