Modulation of edge defects on dual-spin filtering in zigzag β-SiC7 nanoribbons

Abstract: The unique edge states of the zigzag β-SiC7 nanoribbons aroused our attention, and therefore, based on first-principles calculations, we investigated their spin-dependent electronic transport properties by constructing controllable defects to modulate these special edge states. Interestingly, by introducing rectangular edge defects in the SiSi and SiC edge-terminated systems, not only the spin-unpolarized is successfully converted to completely spin-polarized, but also the direction of polarization can be swit… Show more

“…Starting from this discovery, a new subject called spintronics appeared and the spin degree of freedom of electrons as a carrier of information started to attract the intensive attention of researchers. 3–12 Traditional three dimensional MTJs are composed of an insulator sandwiched between two ferromagnetic leads. 13 When the magnetizations of the two leads are parallel, one spin channel will be in a highly conducting state and the other spin channel will be in a lowly conducting state.…”

“…Spintronics, which focuses on using the spin state of electrons to store, carry and read information, has received a great deal of attention in recent years. 1–6 One of the major desirable goals of spintronics is to obtain pure spin current, 7 which is characterized by having the flow of spin angular-momentum without an accompanying charge current in the device. As both spin and charge are degrees of freedom for electrons and each flowing electron carries both charge current and spin current, pure spin currents can only be achieved when the same number of spin-up and spin-down electrons flow in opposite directions.…”
