Moist exposed burn ointment for treating pressure ulcers

Abstract: Background:Pressure ulcers often seriously affect the quality of life of patients. Moist Exposed Burn Ointment (MEBO) has been developed to treat patients with pressure ulcers. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of MEBO in the treatment of pressure ulcers in Chinese patients.Methods:Seventy-two patients with pressure ulcers were randomly assigned to 2 groups who received a placebo or MEBO for 2 months. “…The progressive change in the wound area was monitored on an HD camera on days 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24. Wounds’ pictures have then been uploaded on AutoCAD 2020 (Autodesk, Inc – USA) [ 13 ] to calculate the wound area surface. Wound closure percentage was finally calculated using the following formula:…”

“…Moist exposed burn ointment (MEBO) is a topical Chinese medicine composed of sesame oil and herbal plants [ 26 ] that is clinically used for the treatment of burn wounds [ 27 ]. A study that compared the efficacy of MEBO to a standard therapy in the treatment of partial-thickness facial burns reported comparable rates of wound healing.…”

“…The study also reported that MEBO allowed easier assessment of healing progression, easier application, and was cost-effective [ 28 ]. On the other hand, a randomized controlled clinical trial revealed that MEBO effectively improved pressure ulcer healing compared to placebo [ 26 ]. The possible mechanisms by which MEBO promotes wound healing include increasing neovascularization and fibroblast cells in granulation tissue, and enhancing proliferation of the vascular endothelial cells [ 26 ].…”
