Molecular and morphological variation of Paragonimus westermani in Vietnam with records of new second intermediate crab hosts and a new locality in a northern province

Abstract: Paragonimus westermani is one of the most medically important lung flukes and is widely distributed in Asia. It exhibits considerable variation in morphological, genetic and biological features. In central provinces of Vietnam, a high prevalence of metacercariae of this species has been reported from the crab intermediate host, Vietopotamon aluoiense. In this study, we detected P. westermani metacercariae in two additional crab hosts, Donopotamon haii in Quang Tri Province, central Vietnam and Indochinamon tan… Show more

“…Freshwater snails, which were molecularly identified as Triculinae gen. sp. 2 of the subfamily Triculinae Annandale, were collected in the stream where crabs were heavily infected with metacercariae of Paragonimus spp., in Huong Son Commune, Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province (Doanh et al 2016(Doanh et al , 2018. Snails were examined for microcercous cercariae.…”

“…During our previous survey of snail hosts of Paragonimus spp. in a highly endemic area in central Vietnam (Doanh et al 2013(Doanh et al , 2016, we identified the cercaria of Paragonimus proliferus Hsia et Chen, 1964 in an individ-ual snail of Triculinae gen. sp. 2 (Doanh et al 2018).…”

“…Different species of Paragonimus have their own predilection for infecting speci c genera of snails and crabs and hence the epidemiological prevalence of different species of Paragonimus is determined by the existence of suitable hosts. Some species of Paragonimus have been identi ed only from intermediate hosts in certain geographies which suggests infection and maintenance in non-human mammals (4,5).…”

“…The cercaria was, therefore, identified as P. heterotremus without molecular evidence [ 6 ]. However, subsequent surveys have revealed the presence of six additional Paragonimus species, and metacercariae of two to four species has been found in the same area [ 5 , 8 ]. Moreover, the taxonomy of the “ Oncomelania ” snails in Vietnam has been revised and remains uncertain [ 9 – 11 ].…”

“…The aim of this study was, therefore, to investigate snail hosts of Paragonimus spp. in Yen Bai and Quang Tri Provinces, where Paragonimus metacercariae are highly prevalent with the dominance of P. heterotremus and P. westermani , respectively [ 8 ]. In this survey, we found cercariae of three Paragonimus species, each in a different snail species.…”
