Molecular cloning, expression, and characterization of BmSOD3 in silkworm (Bombyx mori)

Abstract: Superoxide dismutases (SODs) play an essential role in eliminating excess reactive oxygen species and maintaining the redox balance of the immune system. To study the function of BmSOD3 in silkworm, 543-bp full-length complementary DNA-encoding BmSOD3 was cloned from silkworm. The BmSOD3 amino acids were compared to their homologs, and several highly conserved regions were analyzed. We also carried out phylogenetic analyses of the SOD gene. Our results showed that the BmSOD3 gene belonged with the ecCu/Zn SOD … Show more

“…CTL, also known as immulectin, can not only participate in innate immunity, but also recognize pathogenic microorganisms and activate specific immunity ( Theopold et al, 1999 ; Koizumi et al, 1999 ), enhanced hemocyte encapsulation, melanization and enhanced phagocytic efficiency ( Kawasaki, Kawasaki & Yamashina, 1989 ; Yu et al, 2006 ). Sod plays a key role in resisting virus and bacterial invasion ( Shi et al, 2021 ), which can regulate the effect of cellular oxidative stress and participate in fat body immunity ( Nojima et al, 2015 ). Peptidoglycan recognition proteins (PGRPs) are a family that recognize peptidoglycan and participate in immune response, including pgrp-sa, pgrp-sb, pgrp-sc, pgrp-sd, pgrp-lc and pgrp-le ( Kurata, 2014 ).…”

“…Another highly conserved family of proteins identified here relates to the metabolism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) products, as in the case of superoxide dismutase proteins (SOD). This group is universally present and is believed to have arisen long ago in prokaryotes from increased oxygen production in the atmosphere [ 50 , 51 ]. In An.…”
