Molecular Colocalization Using Massive Gold Cluster Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: We report on the ion emission from impacts of hypervelocity massive gold clusters for use in secondary ion mass spectrometry. Two massive gold clusters are considered, 520 keV Au 400 4+ and 1040 keV Au 2800 8+ . The emission of fragment ions and molecular ions is evaluated for a series of neat samples, glycine, phenylalanine, arginine, and gramicidin S. A 2 to 4-fold increase of molecular ion emission is observed from impacts of 1040 keV Au 2800 8+ versus 520 keV Au 400 4+ . Compared to impacts of 20 keV Ar 20… Show more

“…Metal cluster ion beams such as Au 3 + and Bi 3 + have supplanted the traditional monoatomic ion beams (e.g., Ga + ), as they provide non-linear enhancements of secondary ion signal, as the cluster size increases while still being relatively easy to focus [ 6 , 7 ]. Very large, high energy gold clusters (e.g., Au 2800 8+ ) have also been shown to enhance pseudo- molecular ion detection due to lower energy sputtering of secondary species [ 8 ].…”

“…The description of the experimental device has been published previously. 36 Briefly, a liquid metal ion source produces a range of Au cluster projectiles. A Wien filter is used to select the Au 2800 8+ projectiles which are accelerated toward the target obtaining a final kinetic energy of 1040 keV.…”

“…47 MetA SIMS has also been shown useful to reduce the inuence of the chemical environment on the ion yields (referred to as a change of the "matrix effect" in the literature). 48 MetA SIMS has enhanced small molecule ion detection on biolms 49 as well as the signal of small organic compounds such as peptides 50 and additive molecules in tissue. 51,52 Typically, the thickness of the gold coating is about 1 nm.…”
