Molecular discriminators using single wall carbon nanotubes

Abstract: The interaction between single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and amphiphilic molecules has been studied in a solid phase. SWNTs are allowed to interact with different amphiphilic probes (e.g. lipids) in a narrow capillary interface. Contact between strong hydrophobic and amphiphilic interfaces leads to a molecular restructuring of the lipids at the interface. The geometry of the diffusion front and the rate and the extent of diffusion of the interface are dependent on the structure of the lipid at the interfac… Show more

“…Raman shift was observed for different hydrocarbon functionalized SWNTs. The D band and G band for SWNT-SDS complex was observed at 1314 and 1588 cm À1 , SWNT-naphthalene complex at 1317 and 1591 cm À1 , SWNT-anthracene complex at 1318 and 1586 cm À1 respectively while for pristine SWNTs, D band and G band was observed at 1312 and 1582 cm À1 [12] respectively. The I D /I G value which actually measures the structure defect of SWNTs gradually was increased with increase in hydrocarbon concentration as shown in Fig.…”

“…The pristine SWNTs were modified with different hydrocarbons like SDS, naphthalene and anthracene by solid state functionalization process. The solid state functionalization in nanosurfaces has been described by Bhattacharyya et al [12] previously in detail.…”

“…Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been functionalized with lipid by solid state functionalization process as described by Bhattacharyya et al [7] earlier. A molecular restructuring is observed in the interface of SWNTs and lipid due to such functionalization process.…”

“…Here we report a single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) enabled method in which pure pectate lyase, is immobilized in lipid functionalized SWNT using solid state chemistry. The basic principle of solid state functionalization at nanoscale had first been explored by Bhattacharyya et al [7]. The theoretical insight of lipid functionalized SWNT self-assembly [18] (nanorope design) which serve as a molecular machine has been reported previously by Bhattacharyya et al [8,18] for developing a reusable glucose sensor.…”
