Molecular Distillation Process for Recovering Biodiesel and Carotenoids from Palm Oil

Abstract: Carotenoids and biodiesel from palm oil were recovered through a process involving neutralization and transesterification of palm oil followed by molecular distillation of the esters. The concentrated obtained contains more than 30,000 ppm of carotenoids and the distillate contains above 95% of light-colored biodiesel. The experimental data were obtained from falling film and centrifugal molecular distillators. It can be seen that each one has its own characteristics, which are a function of the operating temp… Show more

“…If the possibility of an additional concentration step is considered, according to the best knowledge of the authors, possible processes successfully applied for concentration of carotenoids from oils, are: adsorption chromatography (Baharin et al, 1998), membrane filtration (Darnoko and Cheryan, 2006), and molecular distillation (Batistella et al, 2002). In the first process, organic solvents (mostly Hex and IPA) are involved and hence the process cannot be labelled green and does not represent an alternative to the Hex:IPA process.…”

“…Batistella et al (2002) proposed an approach to recover carotenoids, valuable pigments for the food industry, and biodiesel from palm oil by means of suitable techniques. Jatropha curcas oil, a non-edible vegetable oil, has been considered as a potential alternative feedstock for biodiesel production.…”

“…For example, deodorizer distillate of vegetable oils; palm oil for obtaining tocotrienols and tocopherols; oil of rice for the oryzanol recovery; monoglycerides concentration; carotenoids recovery from palm oil; heavy petroleum characterization, and herbicides. (8,29,47,48,49,50) Molecular distillation is often used to separate or purify high-boiling materials that decompose, oxidize, or polymerize at elevated temperatures. (51) This process can be considered for industrial uses if both distillate and residue are high value-added products.…”
