Molecular dynamics simulations on desulfurization of n-octane/thiophene mixture using silica filled polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposite membranes

Abstract: Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed at 298.15 K and 1 atm in order to study microstructure and transport behaviors of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes containing 0%–8% SiO2 nanoparticles used for the separation of thiophene from n-octane. It was found that the fractional free volume (FFV) of 0% SiO2 was the highest (47.24%) among five nanocomposite membranes and addition of 2%–8% silica nanoparticles led to dramatic decrease in the FFV of the cells. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of a… Show more

“…The sulfur derivatives, used in automobile fuel, are the main sources of various sulfur oxides (SO x ), in atmosphere [ 424 , 425 ], which cause severe health damage and serious environmental pollution [ 426 ]. In fact, such sulfur poisoning leads to the formation acid rain, which creates adverse effects on all the living organisms as well as the archaeological establishments.…”

“…These two components can synergistically enhance the hydrophobicity of fibers, making them appropriate water‐repellent materials for PLA fibers 28,29 . However, the solubility parameter of PDMS (15.5 kJ cm −3/2 ) differs greatly from that of the polymer (PLA ~21.73 kJ cm −3/2 ) 30,31 . Microphase separation frequently occurs during the mixing process when the amount of added PDMS is too high, resulting in deterioration of the mechanical performance of the polymer system.…”

“…28,29 However, the solubility parameter of PDMS (15.5 kJ cm À3/2 ) differs greatly from that of the polymer (PLA $21.73 kJ cm À3/2 ). 30,31 Microphase separation frequently occurs during the mixing process when the amount of added PDMS is too high, resulting in deterioration of the mechanical performance of the polymer system. Simultaneously, silicone powder may act as a nucleation agent in the polymer-forming process, altering the size and rate of crystal formation and complicating the control of the process.…”
