Molecular evidence for taxonomic status of the gudgeon genus Huigobio Fang, 1938 (Teleostei: Cypriniformes), with a description of a new species from Guangdong Province, South China

Abstract: The gudgeon cyprinid genus Huigobio Fang, 1938 is re-diagnosed. It can be distinguished from all other genera of Armatogobionina Kryzhanovsky, 1947 and the Gobioninae by its uniquely modified lower lip. The lower lip has a small, heart-shaped, longitudinally non-bisected central pad and two lateral lobes expanded as a wing-shaped flap completely covered with papillae. The lobes contact each other posteromedially, but are not completely confluent. Huigobio exilicauda, new species, is described from the Zhu-Jian… Show more

“…Tang et al (2011) recovered a clade where the species from the genera Biwia, Microphysogobio, Platysmacheilus, and Huigobio did not form monophyletic clades, though retained these genera as valid and argued for a need to revise these taxa. Jiang & Zhang (2013) evaluated the validity of species of these genera and maintained these genera as valid, including Huigobio. With additional taxon sampling, Huang et al (2016) recovered Huigobio nested among species of Microphysogobio, and thus considers Huigobio as a synonym of Microphysogobio.…”

“…With additional taxon sampling, Huang et al (2016) recovered Huigobio nested among species of Microphysogobio, and thus considers Huigobio as a synonym of Microphysogobio. We follow Huang et al (2016) in recognizing Huigobio as a synonym of Microphysogobio, though a comprehensive taxonomy and phylogeny of Microphysogobio remains unresolved (Jiang & Zhang 2013).…”

“…Some species have been described in recent years. For instance, seven new species have been published since 2000 (Huang et al ., 2016; Huang et al ., 2017; Huang et al ., 2018; Jiang et al ., 2012; Jiang & Zhang, 2013; Xing et al ., 2011; Zhao & Zhang, 2001). At present, 30 species of Microphysogobio have been considered valid in East Asia, including Laos, Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Russia and Korea (Fricke et al ., 2020; Huang et al ., 2018).…”

“…They are known from East Asia including Russia, China, Korean peninsula, and northern Vietnam. Recently, Saurogobio has been referred by Jiang & Zhang (2013) to the Armatogobionina, one of three conventionally recognized subtribes of the tribe Gobionini which is a monophyletic lineage of the Gobioninae (Tang et al 2011). It is distinct from all other genera of the subtribe in possessing a slender or snaky body and an anteriorly positioned dorsal fin with predorsal length greater than postdorsal length (Yue in Chen 1998).…”
