Molecular evidence for the occurrence of tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus on chayote (Sechium edule) in southern India

Abstract: During 2012-2014, mosaic disease on chayote in the farmers field of Kodaikanal region (high altitude zone) of Tamil Nadu was observed. The disease was characterized with severe mosaic, cupping and enation on leaves with reduced fruit size. Disease was found to causes an yield loss of more than 60% with the maximum disease incidence of 100% for the past 5 years consecutively. Preliminary serological and molecular screening indicated the association of begomovirus with the disease. Complete nucleotide sequence a… Show more

“…The ToLCDNV can cause symptoms of leaf yellow spots on cucumber, and symptoms of leaf curling and yellow spots on pumpkin, leaf curling and yellowing on bottle gourd, and leaf curling and blistering on wax gourd. Those symptoms are similar to what was previously described [30,[38][39][40][41]. ToLCNDV-infected oriental melon and tobacco plants developed symptoms of leaf curling and blistering, which are also similar to those previously described [42,43]; however, both plants infected by pseudorecombinant ToLCNDV-A[MY-BG120-17] exhibited severe symptoms of leaf curling, blistering, necrosis and yellow spots.…”

“…crops in these regions. ToLCNDV was found to cause a yield loss of more than 60%, with a maximum disease incidence of 100% for chayote (Sechium edule) in India (Nagendran et al, 2017). Up to 22% of zucchini crops cultivated in the greenhouses at Almeria were affected by ToLCNDV (Crespo et al, 2020), and melon yield losses were approximately 20% in open fields in central Spain (Sáez et al, 2017).…”

“…), bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria), Luffa spp., and Sechium edule. (Chang et al, 2010;Ito et al, 2008;Nagendran et al, 2017;Sohrab et al, 2003;Phaneendra et al, 2012). Since 2012, ToLCNDV has spread westward, with reports from the Middle East, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria in the Mediterranean Basin (EPPO, 2020;Juárez et al, 2014;Kheireddine et al, 2019;Mnari-Hattab et al, 2015;Orfanidou et al, 2019;Panno et al, 2016;Ruiz et al, 2015;Sifres et al, 2018;Yazdani-Khameneh et al, 2016).…”

“…These results showed that despite of co-circulation of different satellites in the same region, this virus has not captured any of them. Earlier cucurbit hosts were infected with ToLCNDV (Nagendran et al 2017;Fortes et al 2016;Nagendran et al 2016) but now it is becoming clear that a new bipartite begomovirus ToL-CPMV is becoming a major viral threat to cucurbits. The intercropping of cucurbits and other crops such as chilies, cotton and especially tomato (a natural host for ToLCPMV) is a common practice in the farmer's fields, so they may become the infection source for the next tomato-growing season.…”
