Molecular phylogeny and morphological revision of Myotis bats (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from Taiwan and adjacent China

Abstract: In taxonomic accounts, three species of Myotis have been traditionally reported to occur on the island of Taiwan: Watase's bat (M. formosus watasei Kishida), the Formosan broad-muzzled bat (M. muricola latirostris Kishida) and the Formosan mouse-eared bat (M. adversus taiwanensis Linde). The discovery in 1997 of an unknown taxon not fitting to the description of any of these species encouraged us to re-examine more thoroughly the systematics and phylogeny of Myotis bats inhabiting Taiwan. We used a combination… Show more

“…rufoniger using vcfutils.pl vcf2fq command of SAMtools (ver 0.1.19) with -l 5 option (no indel present within a 5 bp window) [31]. A multiple sequence alignment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences was conducted using MUSCLE (version 3.8.31) program with default options [2,33]. A phylogenetic analysis was conducted using MEGA 7.0 program [34].…”

“…Recently, its scientific name has been re-assigned to M . rufoniger from Myotis formosus tsuensis based on a molecular phylogeny and morphological study of bats [2]. Although its population is not assessed systematically, it is apparently a rare species that has only been collected in a handful of localities [2].…”

“…Rhinolophus monoceros and R. cornutus are treated as subspecies of R. pusillus following Li et al (2006). Myotis latirostris is allocated in the genus Submyotodon and Myotis ricketti is considered a junior synonym of Myotis pilosus (Ruedi et al, 2015). Myotis taiwanensis is considered subspecies of Myotis fimbriatus following Ruedi et al (2015).…”

“…Based on combined molecular and morphological data, Ruedi et al (2015) evidenced the distribution of M. laniger in Fujian (type locality) and Henan provinces of China, and Taiwan, and called for investigations of specimens allocated to this species from other localities.…”
