Molecular Simulation on Permeation Behavior of CH4/CO2/H2S Mixture Gas in PVDF at Service Conditions

Abstract: Reinforced thermoplastic composite pipes (RTPs) have been widely used for oil and gas gathering and transportation. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has the greatest potential as a thermoplastic liner of RTPs due to its excellent thermal and mechanical properties. However, permeation of gases is inevitable in the thermoplastic liner, which may lead to blister failure of the liner and damage the safe operation of the RTPs. In order to clarify the permeation behavior and obtain the permeation mechanism of the mixt… Show more

“…The volume of a polymer comprises the volume occupied by polymer chains and the free volume between them in the form of "holes". These spaces are dynamic and constantly fluctuate in size and shape due to the thermal motion of the polymer chains and are crucial for the movement of small molecules, ions, or segments of the polymer chains themself [19]. Except for the effects of molecular sizes, critical temperature is a measure of the ease of condensation for gaseous molecules and the solubility increases with it.…”

“…[13] The required energy for the separation of the polymer chains for a diffusion jump is provided by the activation energy of the diffusion process. [14][15][16] It is obvious that larger molecules need larger cavities for their diffusion through the material and the activation energy is increasing. This leads to a decreasing diffusion coefficient with increasing molecular volume.…”

“…There are also ongoing efforts to redefine and increase the upper limits for different materials. With a wide range of data available, machine learning techniques have also been leveraged to understand and find materials that can surpass the Robeson upper bounds . Recent attempts to address mixture diffusivities from MD simulations showed that gas molecules tend to oscillate between adsorption sites, making it difficult to evaluate the long time gas diffusivity. Since the evaluation of diffusion coefficients in mixtures is challenging, several studies have evaluated the permeabilities using pure component diffusion coefficients.…”
