Molecular Structure Effects in the Adsorption Behaviour of some Aromatic Heterocyclic Compounds at High-Area Carbon-Cloth in Relation to Waste-Water Purification

Abstract: Adsorption behaviours of some structurally related aromatic heterocyclic compounds at an high-area carbon-cloth material have been investigated in relation to waste-water purification. Adsorption processes were followed by monitoring the concentration of adsorbates in a specially designed cell using an in situ UV spectrophotometric method. The rates of adsorption were compared by treating the data according to first-order kinetics. Among the seven heterocyclic compounds studied, thiophene was found to exhibit … Show more

“…Studies on hydration behaviors of sulfur and chlorine oxy-anions [1], hydration and ionization of a series of organic bases and their conjugate ions [2], denaturation of bovine serum albumin by urea [3], ionic hydration volumes in relation to solution properties and ionic adsorption [4] are examples of such works. A close correlation was also found between volumetric properties and adsorption characteristics of various aromatic heterocyclic compounds [5].…”

“…They are obtained by sensitive density and sound velocity measurements. In our earlier works, we utilized successfully one or more of these properties in examining hydration behaviors of oxy-anions [9], hydration and ionization of a series of organic bases and their conjugate ions [10], denaturation of BSA by urea [11], ionic hydration in relation to solution properties and ionic adsorption [12], more recently hydration of some water soluble vitamins [13], and correlation of hydration with adsorption for some heterocyclic compounds [14].…”

“…In recent literature the use of high specific area carbon cloth appears to be an attractive alternative for selection of the adsorbent. For example, studies on adsorption and electrosorption at high area carbon cloth have been reported for various adsorbates such as inorganic S-containing anions [15], ethylxanthate and thiocyanate [16,17], phenol, phenoxide and chlorophenols [18], some aromatic heterocyclic compounds [19], pyridine [20], and some pesticides [21,22] in relation to wastewater purification.…”
