Molecular technologies ending with ‘omics’: The driving force toward sustainable plant production and protection

Abstract: As the global population is surging, the agricultural industry is required to meet the food demand while simultaneously providing eco-friendly sustainable crops that can withstand numerous abiotic and biotic stresses. The current era requires high-throughput biotechnology approaches to alleviate the current plant production and protection crisis. Omics approaches are regarded as a collection of high throughput technologies ending with “omics” such as genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, phenomi… Show more

“…Comparing the expression of these biomarkers provides information about the tolerance level of the plants and is also helpful for studying and analyzing different plant genotypes, species, and cultivars (Chaudhary et al 2020 ). The knowledge of plant biomarkers has been used in crop breeding to identify phenotypes or cultivars that are more resilient or susceptible to different abiotic and biotic stress factors and has aided in selecting lines with better traits (Fahimirad and Ghorbanpour 2019 ; Dikobe et al 2023 ). For instance, the molecular and physiological adaptations of different Andean potato genotypes (Tuberosum and Andigena) to drought were assessed by Vasquez-Robinet et al ( 2008 ).…”

“…This journey culminates in metabolomics highlighting the final interactions in plant metabolism such as photosynthesis. Through this integrated approach, the schematic not only elucidates individual 'Omics' disciplines but also their collective impact in advancing our understanding of plant biology and agricultural science [53]. An overview for the use of "Omics" approaches for crop improvement.…”
