Molecularly imprinted polymers for the determination of organophosphorus pesticides in complex samples

Abstract: Organophosphorus compounds constitute an important class of pesticides whose the toxicity of which arises from the inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase enzyme. They exhibit a wide range of physico-chemical properties, thus rendering their determination in complex oil samples particularly difficult. To facilitate their analysis at the trace level in various samples (environmental waters, soils, vegetables…), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) that are synthetic polymers possessing specific cavities designe… Show more

“…MIPs are obtained by a copolymerization process in porogen solvent with template molecule, functional monomer, and cross‐linking agent [16–18]. Due to well‐known unique advantages of good stability, high selectivity, low cost, and ease in preparation [19–21], MIPs have been widely used in SPE process for different trace pesticide residues such as organophosphorus pesticides [22–24], imidazole fungicides [25], organochlorine fungicides [26], iprodione fungicides [27], triazole pesticides [28], phenoxyacetic acid fungicides [29], benzimidazole fungicide [30], and pyrethroids insecticides [31,32]. Those reported applications have illustrated that molecularly imprinted solid‐phase extraction (MISPE) showed high extracting efficiency, little matrix effect, and consuming less organic solvent [33,34].…”

“…Numerous studies have addressed this aim in the last decade, developing methods for the pretreatment of the different types of samples. Several studies have been undertaken for dealing with the various types of samples, including water samples, fruits and vegetables, fatty vegetable matrices, foods of animal origin, olive and olive oil, baby‐food, and honey, using various techniques . However, limited studies have been peformed aiming to analyse different OPPs in different food samples.…”

“…So, the molecular/ionic imprinted polymers (MIPs/IIPs) possess high specicity and selectivity towards template molecules/ions, and they can selectively recognize templates at the molecular level. Due to the merits of high recognition selectivity, good mechanical and chemical stability, and preparation simplicity, MIPs/IIPs have been utilized in multiple applications, such as solid-phase extraction, in chromatographic separation, as sensors, in drug release and as catalysts, etc [3][4][5][6] .…”
