Mondor’s disease

Abstract: Mondor's disease (MD) is a rare condition, which is considered a thrombophlebitis of the subcutaneous veins. It commonly occurs on the anterolateral thoracoabdominal wall, but it can also occur on the penis, groin, antecubital fossa and posterior cervical region. The clinical features are a sudden and typically asymptomatic onset of a cord-like induration, although some patients report a feeling of 'strain'. It is a self-limiting process that lasts a short period of time, which may be the reason why there are … Show more

“…The pathogenesis of the disease is unclear but related with vessel-wall damage, stasis and hypercoagulable state .Histopathological findings include obstructed or obliterated vasculitis [1,5] Clinically is characterized by subcutaneous tender, usually unilateral cord-like phlebitis commonly on the breast or anterior chest wall but it can also involve the penis, groin, antecubital fosse, and posterior cervical region. Most of the cases are idiopathic but trauma, surgery, excessive physical activity and rarely breast carcinoma have been considered a predisposing factor.…”

“…7 Immunohistochemical staining for CD31 and D240 was identified recently as the best method to distinguish small veins from lymphatic vessels; this method is used especially in the differential diagnosis of Mondor's disease to rule out other diseases in which veins or lymphatic vessels are affected. 8 Although observation and sexual abstinence are sufficient for most cases as in our second patient, several authors recommend anticoagulants, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents, local heparinoid ointment in acute and subacute stages, respectively. 1,4,9 Recanalization process was reported to last approximately 9 weeks.…”
