“…In addition, this study reported a higher rate of intra-amniotic infection caused by Candida species in pregnancies with an IUD, than in those without an IUD. These findings are in agreement with previous reports demonstrating an association between intra-amniotic Candida infection and pregnancies with an IUD [8, 14, 28, 33, 46, 47, 50, 57]. Candida species are common saprophytes in the genital tract and are present in up to 20-25% of pregnant women [55].…”

“…Despite the frequent prevalence of vaginal Candida infection during pregnancy, intra-amnioitc infection caused by Candida species is rare. Previous studies suggested two mechanisms by which Candida species could gain access to the amniotic cavity in pregnancies with an IUD: 1) endometrial yeast contamination may be present at the time of IUD insertion [47]; and 2) the strings of an IUD may serve as a route for ascending infection [13]. Chassot et al [9] have demonstrated the in vitro adhesive capacity to IUDs of Candida albicans isolated from vaginal exudates of patients with vaginal candidiasis, and its formation of a biofilm which makes a progressive source of infection.…”

“…Potasman and others reported that antibiotics, mainly belonging to the [3-1actam group, given to pregnant women with Candida vaginitis fostered the development of candidemia [16]. There is further evidence that foreign bodies such as intrauterine devices or intravenous catheters may act as portal of entry for C. albicans [11,[20][21][22]. Septicemia during pregnancy not only represents a teratogenic risk but also entails the danger of abortion.…”

“…Usually, the diagnosis of diffuse and extensive chorio-amnionitis is suggested by the aspect of the fetal surface of the placenta (cases I and 4). Filaments and spores may not be found in this diflTuse inflammation, almost exclusively consisting of polynuclears [Benirschke and Raphael, 1958;Lopez andAterman, 1968: Schweid andHopkins, 1968]. However, the lesions may be focal as on the cord [Blanc, 1961: Ho andAterman.…”

“…Schweid and Hopkins [1968], Aterman [1968], Misenhimer and Garc ia Buñuel and Aterman [1969], Ho [1970] and Blanc [personal commun.. 1973] report seven spontaneous abortions; in five cases, Candida albicans was the only pathogenic agent found; the fungus, present in the uterine cavity in a quiescent state, would be a factor of abortion as its virulence would be suddenly increased [Misenhimer and Garcia Buñuel. 1969], Sonnenschein et at.…”
