Monitoring bank performance in the presence of risk

Abstract: This paper devises management and accounting tools for monitoring bank performance. We first propose a multidimensional efficiency measure that integrates credit risk and is adapted to the real banking technology. Second, traditional accounting ratios complement the analysis. Third, the impact of different risk measures over efficiency and accounting ratios is shown. Fourth, we examine the effect of CEO turnover on future performance. An empirical application considers a unique dataset of Costa Rican banks dur… Show more

“…Several performance measurement systems have been reported in the literature (Chan et al , ; Önüt et al , ; Awasthi et al , ; Epure and Lafuente, ; Roy et al , ; Masum et al , ). The BSC approach enables examination of an organization's performance from the four main perspectives of finance, internal business process, customers, and learning and growth (Kaplan and Norton, ).…”

“…DEA is a complex benchmarking non-parametric technique that, through linear programming, yields a production possibilities frontier that approximates the technology of the analyzed units. The flexible nature of DEA models is especially appealing for applications in diverse and heterogeneous contexts (Grifell-Tatjé and Lovell, 1999;Epure and Lafuente, 2015). The second stage proposes a cluster analysis that introduces country-specific factors unconnected to the DEA model that might explain performance differences across the analyzed countries.…”

“…Many scholars have employed the directional distance function to measure banking efficiency with NPLs because of its ability to solve the oriented problem successfully [21,22]. Fukuyama and Weber [23] introduced that directional distance function solves the oriented problem, which employs a generalized nonradial and nonoriented data envelopment analysis to solve both problems.…”
