Monitoring benthic foraminiferal dynamics at Bottsand coastal lagoon (western Baltic Sea)

Abstract: Abstract. Benthic foraminifera from Bottsand coastal lagoon, western Baltic Sea, have been studied since the mid-1960s. They were monitored annually in late autumn since 2003 at the terminal ditch of the lagoon. There were 12 different species recognised, of which three have not been recorded during earlier investigations. Dominant species showed strong interannual fluctuations and a steady increase in population densities over the last decade. Elphidium incertum, a stenohaline species of the Baltic deep water… Show more

“…Salinity and temperature of Esteiro do Ancão ebb waters were routinely measured during the sampling campaigns with hand-held WTW Cond 3210 or LF320 conductimeters equipped with a TetraCon 325 probe. The conductimeters had a precision of < 0.5 % of measured conductivity and < 0.1 K according to a manufacturer's test certificate (Schönfeld, 2018). Water samples were taken from ebb waters in winter 2016/2017, and during the sampling campaigns in 2017, 2018 and 2019.…”

“…The few studies reveal that foraminiferal response happens very fast, or with a delay of some years due to the accumulation of empty tests in the sediment (e.g. Mendes et al, 2020;Schönfeld, 2018).…”

“…Second, these events occurred at a constant rate over time. These limitations are, however, rather an exception than the rule in nature: many benthic foraminifera show seasonal re-production events that are linked to pulses of food supply or to the excess of certain temperature or salinity thresholds (Gooday, 1988;Lambshead and Gooday, 1990;Altenbach, 1992;Lutze and Wefer, 1980;Schönfeld and Numberger, 2007;Schönfeld, 2018). Food particles are not evenly distributed on the sea floor but scattered (e.g.…”

“…Their short generation time and good preservation potential of dead, empty tests [31][32][33], render benthic foraminifera a prominent tool for reconstructing environmental parameters in the present and past [34]. This particularly holds true under the ongoing anthropogenic pressure, like global warming and pollution, as foraminiferal assemblage structures are going to change dramatically [35][36][37][38]. Even though the sensitivity living species for certain environmental parameters have been well constrained, the living fauna represents only a snapshot in time.…”
