Monopoles and Confining Strings in QCD

Abstract: We review the recent results in the physics of the magnetic monopoles in gluodynamics and a dual formulation of non-Abelian theories, relevant to the physics of the confinement. It occurs that the dual gluon is a U(1) gauge boson, despite of the fact that usual gluons are non-Abelian. The effective infrared Lagrangian for gluodynamics is suggested which leads to the Casimir scaling of the string tension for quarks in various representations. We also show that the results of the calculations in lattice gauge th… Show more

“…If we take for R = R 0 some fixed point, for example such that R 0 V F (R 0 ) = 2.5 (this point corresponds to the edge of the region, where quasi-linear asymptotic of V F (R) begins), we get from the results 39 for some of the representations: It is of interest to discuss the situation which takes place in another popular confinement scenario -dual Meissner effect in the Abelian-projected formulation of QCD. 25,40 We refer the reader to the review papers, 26,27 where the details of this approach are extensively discussed. It is worth noting that at the present moment the dual Meissner confinement scenario is often considered as the most reliable microscopic picture of confinement and the method of Abelian projections (in line with the Abelian dominance hypothesis 41 ) as the most adequate language for its description.…”

“…This disadvantage of the MAG yields the dubious reputation that the QCD magnetic monopole might be a gauge artifact. Recently, some ideas of defining gauge invariant monopole on a lattice were submitted, e.g., [11]. These approaches could be compared with confinement on a lattice based on other definitions [12].…”
