Monster in the Dark: The Ultraluminous GRB 080607 and Its Dusty Environment

Abstract: We present early-time optical through infrared photometry of the bright gamma-ray burst GRB 080607, starting only 6 s following the initial trigger in the rest frame. Complemented by our previously published spectroscopy, this high-quality photometric dataset allows us to solve for the extinction properties of the redshift 3.036 sightline, giving perhaps the most detailed information on the ultraviolet continuum absorption properties of any sightline outside our Local Group to date. The extinction properties a… Show more

“…The shape of our best-fit GRB host extinction curve strongly contrasts with the extinction curves of the highly extinguished GRBs 070802 and 080607 measured in Elíasdóttir et al (2009) and Perley et al (2011) respectively, and GRB 080605 and GRB 080805 as measured by Zafar et al (2011), all of which are flatter and have a clear 2175 Å feature. None of these GRBs were included in our sample due to the faintness of their observed optical afterglows.…”

“…Additionally, the widespread use of this model (e.g. Clayton et al 2003;Gordon et al 2003;Elíasdóttir et al 2009;Perley et al 2011) allows us to compare our best-fit results to the dust extinction properties of other local and extragalactic environments.…”

“…A metallicity of around solar was also inferred from GRB-DLAs for GRBs 070802 and 080607, both of which were substantially reddened, and had 2175 Å dust features (Elíasdóttir et al 2009;Prochaska et al 2009;Perley et al 2011b) as well. This seems to support the association between the 2175 Å bump and chemically evolved galaxies (e.g., Noll et al 2009).…”

“…Stratta et al 2004;Kann et al 2006;Starling et al 2007;Schady et al 2007Schady et al , 2010, several recent observations show a strong 2175 Å bump in the afterglow's SED at the redshift of the burst (e.g. Krühler et al 2008a;Prochaska et al 2009;Elíasdóttir et al 2009;Deng et al 2009;Perley et al 2011), where its location can be used as a redshift tracer in case the photometric data are well sampled.…”
