Morpho-Molecular Characterization of Microfungi Associated with Phyllostachys (Poaceae) in Sichuan, China

Abstract: In the present study, we surveyed the ascomycetes from bamboo of Phyllostachys across Sichuan Province, China. A biphasic approach based on morphological characteristics and multigene phylogeny confirmed seven species, including one new genus, two new species, and five new host record species. A novel genus Paralloneottiosporina is introduced to accommodate Pa. sichuanensis that was collected from leaves of Phyllostachys violascens. Moreover, the newly introduced species Bifusisporella sichuanensis was isolate… Show more

“…Fungi are abundant in plant culms and leaves, and the number of saprophytic fungi is more than that of pathogenic fungi, as shown in studies on bambusicolous fungi ( Dai et al, 2016 ; Zeng et al, 2022 ). During our investigation, more than 300 specimens have been collected, from which about 200 isolates were obtained.…”

“…Some members act as endophytes and saprobes ( Jeewon et al, 2017 ; Rashmi et al, 2019 ; Mortimer et al, 2021 ; Xu et al, 2022 ). As the outline of Dothideomycetes and Sordariomycetes has been frequently revised ( Hyde et al, 2013 , 2020 ; Wijayawardene et al, 2014 ; Maharachchikumbura et al, 2015 , 2016 ; Hongsanan et al, 2020a , b ), numerous novel species, genera, families, and orders have been discovered ( Maharachchikumbura et al, 2021 ; Pem et al, 2021 ; Zeng et al, 2022 ). The taxonomy of the two classes remains in a perpetual transitional state.…”

“…Currently, 157 epithets under the genus Apiospora are listed in Index Fungorum (September 2023), while 116 epithets are listed in Species Fungorum. Out of these, molecular data have confirmed 91 Apiospora species [12][13][14][15][17][18][19][20]22].…”

“…The sexual morph of Apiospora is characterized by immersed to erumpent, multiloculate, perithecial ascostromata, unitunicate, broadly clavate to cylindric-clavate asci, and hyaline, ellipsoidal, inequilaterally 2-celled ascospores with or without a gelatinous sheath [5,9,10,14,22,23]. The asexual morphs of Apiospora include hyphomycetes and coelomycetes.…”

“…Sichuan Province has a variety of bamboo forests and inhabits a large number of bamboo fungi due to its complex topography and climate conditions [9]. Some well-represented families of bamboo fungi in Sichuan Province are Astrosphaeriellaceae [10], Bambusicolaceae [9,11], Occultibambusaceae [9,12] distributed in Dothideomycetes, and Apiosporaceae [12,13], Nectriaceae [10,14], Phyllachoraceae [10,15] distributed in Sordariomycetes.…”
