“…Unlike the observations of Agatha et al (2005), the elongation and shaping of the macronucleus occurred in post‐dividers, although only a few specimens were observed in this stage. The addition of kinetosomes to the opisthe's somatic kineties seems to occur at their anterior ends, as was also observed by Petz and Foissner (1993) for tintinnids. During the whole ontogenetic process, the kinety arrangement previously considered a generic trait by Agatha et al (2005) did not occur, suggesting that the elongation of kinety 2 and the shortening of kineties 3 and 4, eventually abutting on kinety 2, could be derived characters in other species of Pelagostrobilidium .…”

“…The ciliate biota from temporary shallow ponds has scarcely been investigated at all, despite their importance in the food webs arising from these transient habitats (Andrushchyshyn, Magnusson, and Williams 2003). Although oligotrichid and aloricate choreotrichid ciliates are very well known in marine environments or in brackish waters, only a few investigations have been conducted in freshwaters in the last decades (Foissner, Skogstad, and Pratt 1988; Krainer 1991, 1995; Petz and Foissner 1992, 1993). …”

“…Here, we follow Mayr and Bock () and Hörandl and Stuessy () in recognizing the paraphyletic suborder Strobilidiina. Within the tintinnids, those with two ventral organelles and those having a ventral kinety form distinct branches; the different structure and origin of the ventral organelles and the ventral kinety indicate that they are not homologous (dikinetidal and originating de novo vs. usually monokinetidal and originating by intrakinetal proliferation of basal bodies and a subsequent split of the ciliary row; Petz and Foissner ; Fig. 44, 45).…”

“…oral primordium forms in a subsurface pouch or tube in some species of both groups, somatic ciliature originates by intrakinetal proliferation; Petz, 1994). Petz & Foissner (1993) concluded that there is no distinct character that defines oligotrich ciliates as a monophyletic taxon. Dale & Lynn (1998) discussed the phylogeny of oligotrich ciliates and concluded that the only synapomorphy of strombidiids, choreotrichids and tintinnids is 'the movement of the anlage into a subsurface invagination of the cortex', which also occurs in hypotrich ciliates and could therefore be a convergent character.…”

“…On the other hand, there have been fewer works examining the cytology of tintinnids (e.g. Foissner & Wilbert, 1979;Laval-Peuto & Brownlee, 1986;Choi et al, 1992;Petz & Foissner, 1993).…”
