Morphological disparity in the evolution of the ophthalmosaurid forefin: new clues from the Upper Jurassic of Argentina

Abstract: Jurassic and Cretaceous marine deposits worldwide show that ophthalmosaurid ichthyosaurs are major components of marine tetrapod communities for almost 76 myr. One of the major features characterizing this clade is the complexity and diversity of their stylopodium-zeugopodium morphology. Upper Jurassic deposits of the Vaca Muerta Formation in north-west Patagonia (Argentina) have yielded the richest Tithonian ophthalmosaurid records from Gondwana. Here, we present a new ophthalmosaurid from this lithostratigra… Show more

“…Noteworthy, within a general tendency towards more integrated and modular fins, the thunnosauria morphospace is expanded in all directions. Similar results have been obtained through the analysis of humerus and zeugopodium morphology among ophthalmosaurids [20]. Other lines of evidence, like those provided by bone microanatomy, e.g., [30,31], also suggest that thunnosaurs, and particularly ophthalmosaurids, were ecologically diverse throughout the Jurassic.…”

“…The Early/Middle Jurassic transition, although poorly documented [17][18][19], witnessed the emergence of the ophthalmosaurians. In contrast, the Jurassic/Cretaceous transition marks a profound drop in the diversity (and probably disparity) of the clade [16,20].…”

“…We are confident of the ophthalmosaurian affinities of the genus due to the morphology of the angular and basioccipital. We reanalyzed PIMUZ A/III 5279 in the ophthalmosaurian-specific matrix of [ 76 ], in order to better resolve its position within Ophthalmosauria. We added Nannopterygius enthekiodon , Catutosaurus gasparinae , and Thalassodraco etchesi to the matrix, since based on the preliminary analysis PIMUZ A/III 5279 is recovered near the base of Ophthalmosauria within ophthalmosaurine-grade ophthalmosaurians, thus these genera are pertinent to better resolving its phylogenetic relationships.…”
