Identifying intraspecific units or stocks of a species with unique morphological characteristics has now become more powerful and enables a better management of these subunits of species and ensures better management and conservation of the fishery resources. These morphometric characteristics typically show ontogenic changes in body shape particularly rapid at key life history stages. For about the past 50 years, traditional multivariate morphometrics, accounting for variation in size and shape, have successfully discriminated many fish stocks throughout the world, however, they have always been criticized because of several biases and weaknesses. To contribute to the advancement of fish stock identification, a new technology based on ''Truss Network System'' has emerged as a new tool with more effective strategies for descriptions of shape, better data collection and diversified analytical tools. In the present communication, recent developments made in the discipline of morphometric differentiation in body shape among fish populations are briefly reviewed and it appears that the truss based techniques has now been proved to be more effective than manual distance measurement for the management of fishery resources throughout the world. However in India, these techniques have not been commonly applied in fisheries research to discriminate fish stocks. The study expands the potential through various advancements in morphometric differentiation analysis which could serve as a tool for stock identification among fish populations.

Fish behaviour can change to accommodate a variable environment, but changes in behaviour have not been considered in the context of density-dependent habitat use. In Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, we measured how fish density movement and schooling behaviour changed with habitat in 2 gadids, Atlantic cod Gadus morhua and Greenland cod Gadus ogac, using a combination of field-seines, mark-recapture and laboratory experiments. Density estimates from seines (n = 427) over 5 yr (1996, 1998 to 2001) indicated that these species associated with eelgrass but periodically were detected in high abundance over unvegetated habitat (i.e. sand). Within-site catch variation indicated both species aggregated more in sand than eelgrass habitat, and, in Atlantic cod, aggregations over sand increased as density in eelgrass increased. Although such patterns in catch data could be interpreted as due to the effects of differential mortality between habitats, a mark-recapture experiment indicated that both species of cod were not site-attached and moved between seine locations. Furthermore, video-analysis from laboratory experiments demonstrated that cod formed tighter aggregations over sand compared to eelgrass habitats. Our results suggest that juvenile cod modify their behaviour with changing density, possibly as a means of exploiting poor-quality habitats when high-quality habitats are saturated with conspecifics. Consequently, habitat suitability for Atlantic cod may be a dynamic rather than fixed variable in density-dependent habitat models.

Phenotypic plasticity is the capacity of an organism's phenotype to vary in different environments. Although diet-induced phenotypic plasticity has been documented in New World cichlids, it has been hypothesised that this type of plasticity would be limited in certain Old World cichlids, because of the morphological constraints on the jaw imposed by mouth-brooding. This hypothesis was experimentally tested by determining the effect of different diets on the head and jaw morphology of split broods of several species of haplochromine cichlids from Lake Malaŵi, Africa, and two substrate-spawning cichlids, one from the Old World, Tilapia mariae (Boulenger), and one from the New World, Herichthys cyanoguttatum (Baird and Girard). Different feeding regimes resulted in differences in head morphologies in both New and Old World cichlid species. Although Old World mouth-brooding haplochromine cichlids exhibited phenotypic plasticity, the magnitude of head-shape plasticity observed was greater in the New World substrate-spawning cichlid, H. cyanoguttatum. The Old World tilapiine cichlid, T. mariae, did not exhibit phenotypic plasticity of head morphology. Experiments with modified foods demonstrated that the observed changes were unrelated to dietary nutrition, but were a result of differing feeding modes. Phenotypic plasticity might have contributed to the extensive trophic radiation and subsequent explosive speciation observed in Old World haplochromine cichlids. The existence of phenotypic plasticity has implications for morphology-based species descriptions as well.
