“…Within the lateral geniculate nucleus we observed small and large varicosities, consistent with prior descriptions of terminals arising from axons of different calibers (25). Axons that arise from particular classes of RGCs terminate at characteristic depths within the mouse DLG (22,(26)(27)(28)(29). Our results do not show any consistent laminar patterning within the DLG, perhaps because of insufficient time for segregation to occur, insufficient sampling, absence of targeting cues, or because multiple classes of RGCs are regenerating their axons.…”

“…The vast majority, approximately 80%, of the neurons of dLGN are thalamocortical (TC) neurons, also referred to as relay neurons, as they relay information from the retina to the cortex. Although clear morphological differences were reported among relay cells, TC cells are not PV-ir and an analysis of their electrophysiological properties did not reveal any additional distinguishing characteristics (Krahe et al, 2011). The remaining neurons of mouse dLGN are PV-ir GABAergic interneurons, whose density may be as low as 10-20% (Arcelli et al, 1997;Jaubert-Miazza et al, 2005) as recently confirmed by the analysis of the ultrastructure of synaptic profiles (Bickford et al, 2010).…”

“…The eye was placed back into the optic cup and heads were incubated in PBS containing 0.1% sodium azide as follows: E14-E16, 5-7 days at room temperature; E17-P0, 5-7 days at 37°C. The retinogeniculate projection was labeled with CTB as described previously (Jaubert-Miazza et al, 2005;Rebsam et al, 2009), and single neuron labeling in the CTBlabeled dLGN was performed as described previously (Krahe et al, 2011 Fig. S5).…”
