Morphology and function of the reproductive system of representatives of the genus Uca

Abstract: The morphology of the reproductive organs of three species of fiddler crabs, Uca ecuadoriensis, Uca c.f. forcipata, and Uca tangeri were investigated to subsequently produce a model of their mode of operation. Vulva, vagina, and spermatheca in females, and the first and second gonopods in males were examined by applying histological techniques and electron microscopy. In all three species, vulva and vagina conform to the concave type, and the spermatheca complies with the ventral type. The tissue of the oviduc… Show more

“…During egg laying this tissue might hinder sperm from entering the oviduct and favor entrance of oocytes into the SR, as suggested for ocypodid crabs (Lautenschlager et al 2010). More recently, this kind of tissue was also reported for pinnotherid crabs and named as a 'holocrine transfer tissue' from which oocytes have to pass through holocrine secretion at ovulation (Becker et al 2011).…”

“…The seminal receptacles of Uca c.f. forcipata and Uca ecuadoriensis have apparently a lateral organization as well (Lautenschlager et al, ). However, a more detailed view shows that these seminal receptacles have a special secondary modification including an uncommon arrangement of the glandular epithelium consisting of three zones with tubular canals combined with a strong concentration of the glandular epithelium at the seminal receptacle wall.…”
