“…Some of them are potential toxin producers (Nakajima et al 1981). Epiphytic Prorocentrum species are mainly associated with okadaic acid and the production of analogues (Faust 1991, Nascimento et al 2005. These findings support those of Romdhane et al (1998) and Armi et al (2010) in Tunisia and those of Aligizaki and Nikolaidis (2006), Mangialajo et al (2008) and Totti et al (2010) in the northern Mediterranean Sea.…”

“…This is despite the fact that Dinophysiales and Prorocentrales share major synapomorphies. Both lineages have a theca divided into lateral halves and have two apical pores, one large and the other small, with both flagella arising from the larger pore (39), and many Dinophysis and some Prorocentrum species (e.g., P. lima) produce polyether-type toxins (27). The apparently close relationship between the two dinoflagellate orders based on these features is not strongly supported by phylogenies based on multiple genes and editing characteristics.…”

“…Nascimento et al, 2005;Mohammad-Noor et al, 2006;Aligizaki et al, 2009). Great variability in cell size and shape was observed by Aligizaki et al (2009) for P. lima strains from the North Aegean coastal waters, who considered them to be members of a P. lima species complex.…”

“…Outside tropical and subtropical areas, Ostreopsis is very frequent and well-documented in the Mediterranean Sea (Vila et al, 2001;Turki, 2005;Aligizaki & Nikolaidis, 2006;Ciminiello et al, 2006;Mangialajo et al, 2008;Totti et al, 2010) and reports of blooms in temperate waters have increased in recent years (Shears & Ross, 2009;Rhodes, 2010). Coolia and Prorocentrum appear to be more widely distributed, extending to colder waters than Gambierdiscus and Ostreopsis (Faust, 1991;Bravo et al, 2001;Levasseur et al, 2003;Nascimento et al, 2005;Maranda et al, 2007;Vale et al, 2009).…”
